6 Tips On How To Help You Prevent Skin Cancer
Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? According to the American Cancer Association, May is National Skin Cancer Prevention Month. Or some call it Melanoma Awareness Month. Either way, it’s time to get smart about your skin and the sun with these 6 tips:
1. KNOW YOUR ENEMY
Please avoid tanning beds at all costs because they are the sun’s rays on steroids! UVA (Ultra Violet Aging) rays and UVB (Ultra Violet Burning) rays from tanning beds AND from the sun itself are NOT your friends! The best way to protect yourself against skin cancer is to be aware of it and most importantly how to prevent it!
2. SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR DERMATOLOGIST ASAP AND REGULARLY.
Don’t put this off! Ignorance is not bliss! Your dermatologist can help you determine if any skin abnormalities, new growths, suspicious looking moles or odd bumps are cause for concern.
3. AVOID BUYING/USING SUNSCREENS WITH CHEMICALS AND INGREDIENT NAMES YOU CANNOT PRONOUNCE
We at Poema Skincare are vehemently against chemical sunscreens. Why? Chemical sunscreens still absorb the sun’s rays into the skin much like a window screen still lets air in and out, potentially leading to cancer that we were trying to prevent in the first place! Not to mention they take 30 minutes from the moment you apply it on in order to actually start working. So you have to wait a full 30 minutes in order to be protected. Bummer!
4. CHOOSE TO ALWAYS WEAR CHEMICAL-FREE SUNBLOCKS
Opt for natural mineral sunscreens that offer protection without the chemicals because they bounce/reflect the sun’s rays away from the skin. Not to mention they only take one minute from the moment you apply it on in order to actually start working. Yay! Look for two ingredient names on the back that are listed together in one bottle for the best natural, non-chemical protection: ZINCE OXIDE AND TITANIUM DIOXIDE. Our non-greasy, non-smelly, non-goopy Sunblock SPF 30 is a perfect chemical-free choice and investment and be purchased in-office or online!
5. DON’T FALL FOR A HIGH SPF NUMBER
Studies show an SPF number of 50, 75, 90 on a sunscreen bottle really doesn’t do much more defending of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays than an SPF 30. (SPF 15 is too low and there is significant evidence that SPF 30 is much better at protecting you than an SPF 15). Big box companies play on your emotions and know if they advertise a higher SPF rating on their bottles, you’ll buy it. A downside is that consumers like you are lulled into a false sense of security with a higher SPF rating
6. RE-APPLY YOUR NON-CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN EVERY 60-90 MINUTES
No matter what sunscreen or sunblock you choose to buy and no matter what SPF rating number is printed on it, please know that it must be re-applied every 60-90 minutes because its protection factor starts to wears off the moment you apply it.
Have a Happy and Healthy Day!
